External user resources

hi there,

Cheers on the GA of Retool external! One very quick question is what differences there are between resources of internal end user versus that of external users? In terms of workflows and databases, do external uses enjoy less resources than internal end users? Thanks

Here are some broad differences, and someone from the retool team can chime in.

1. Access to Workflows and Databases:

  • Internal Users: Typically have broader access to workflows, databases, and other resources as defined by the organization's permissions and roles.
  • External Users: Access is usually more restricted for security reasons. They may have limited access to specific workflows and databases necessary for their tasks.

2. Permissions:

  • Internal Users: Often have more comprehensive permissions and can create, edit, or manage various resources within Retool.
  • External Users: Permissions are usually more limited and controlled. External users might only have read or limited write access depending on role assignments.

3. Resource Allocation:

  • The core functionality and performance of Retool are consistent for all users. However, resource allocation concerning data access might be more constrained for external users to maintain security and compliance.

4. Usage Scenarios:

  • Internal Users: More likely to engage in administrative or development tasks.
  • External Users: Typically engage in consumer-facing tasks or workflows designed for external collaboration or customer-facing operations.

5. Security & Compliance:

  • Security and compliance measures for external users are often stricter to prevent unauthorized access and to comply with various data protection regulations.

It's probably not helpful, but the way I've remembered this is:

internal users = co-workers
external users = random strangers
