Load app folders published page by default, app search should not be restricted to recents

Since the launch of the recents tab feature I've found it incredibly frustrating to not return back to the published tab once I click into an application.

For example,

  • Open retool
  • Click Published tab
  • Open an app
  • Hit browser back button to change apps
  • I'm returned back to the recents tab

Also when I open retool and use the search functionality, it only shows results from the recents tab, not across all the apps that I have.

In general I'm not a fan of the recents tab. As a software engineer in my company many people come to me complaining they can't find applications anymore and the answer is usually that the search no longer works as expected because its only searching within recent.

+1 frustrating

I was about to contact the Retool support and have just found this issue being mentioned earlier in this post App folders have disappeared

Though not technically a functional bug but still get frustrated after upgrade. Better at least allow the user to choose the default tab or allow the user to re-order the tab.

Hi @geelove,

Thank you for the feedback, I can definitely communicate this to our internal team on dev experience to help better improve the ergonomics of navigating apps and the tabbed options.

I tried testing out your steps and after hitting the back button on my browser I was returned to the 'published' tab, while you had mentioned you were being returned to the 'recents' tab. Is there any step I am missing to reproduce this behavior?

For search being limited to the recents tab, I agree that the search should by default be as broad as possible and when users select tabs be more refined. I can share this with our engineer team. I also like @zelterNN's idea of being able to chose a default tab and to be able to reorder the tabs as well.

Hi @Jack_T

Thanks for following up! I believe you can return to the Published tab after navigating back, since you were originally on the Published page (the URL includes a redirect /views/published to the Publish tab) before entering the app.

That said, the more typical flow is when I—or most users—click the Retool icon in the upper-left corner, which takes us back to the default home screen. That screen now defaults to the Recent tab.

Hope that helps clarify!

Ah I see, thank you for the added details @zelterNN!

I can definitely make a feature request to have the navigation back to the org's app list respect the tab that was most recently being viewed :+1:
