Hey @QuinnL, if you just want to dismiss it temporarily while viewing, there's an X in the footer you can click to close it.
For a more permanent solution: if the user is set to the Viewer role, the editor footer won't appear at all, Viewers only see the app itself without any editor chrome.
Let me know what your specific use case is if this doesn't cover it!
Hey @QuinnL how's it going? Was my answer above helpful?
Hi @ChiEn
Not really, I also use it with internal users who should have no direct access to the backend.
So would be nice if you can hide the click to edit footer in its entirety
Using the free subscription
Hey again @QuinnL, thanks for clarifying!
On the Free and Team plans, permissions are fixed. Each organization has just two groups, All Users (which has edit access to apps) and Admin. Because everyone has edit access, the edit footer shows for them, and there's no way to set a user to view-only on these plans.
To remove the footer for a user, you'd set them to view-only access (our Viewer group), which becomes available on the Business plan and above. That's where you can create custom groups and control access levels per user. Here's the breakdown: Free and Team plans.
Happy to help you weigh whether Business is the right fit, just let me know! ![]()
As feedback, I feel paid users (on the Team plan) should be allowed to hide this edit button and get “Viewer” access. Even allowing just 1 additional non-builder with viewer access would be fine.
Things were going pretty smooth with setup, but after spending a bunch of time setting things up I’m now confronted with this combined “Viewer access / Floating edit tool bar problem”. I also don’t think it’s worth upgrading further at this time. If Retool sticks with this upgrade gate I think it should be broadcast more clearly on the pricing page without tripping people up after they’ve invested time – unless tripping people up was indeed the goal with this upgrade trigger.
The edit toolbar is too disruptive to a paid user (especially on mobile). By all means, display the floating edit toolbar to and prevent “View only” to free users. But, this doesn’t make sense for a paid user.
Additionally, having the sign-in workflow be: {your app direct link → sign-in → general select app page} is a poor experience.
It should be {your app direct link → sign-in → your in your app}.
It’s hard to believe I’m all setup, paid, ready to use the app, and now I’m starting to research alternatives again.
Hey again @westeros, sorry it's not better news here! Totally understand the frustration after putting in all that setup time.
Just to clarify where things stand: on the Team plan, permissions are fixed to two groups (All Users, Admin), so there's no way today to give one teammate view-only access without moving to Business. Thanks for taking the time to write this up, really appreciate all the feedback.
Really don't want this to be the reason you walk away, you've clearly already put in the work to get this set up well. If anything changes on your end, happy to talk through options too. ![]()
Is there any way to move where it first appears?
Having it overlay the content is pretty annoying, especially when the builder puts popovers underneath it.
The edit bar in the classic app never overlapped the content.
