Clarification on Retool's Pricing for External Users: Is There a Charge for Test Users or Members?

Hello,

I’ve decided to use Retool as a low-code solution for my startup. My goal is to create a website, attract external customers, and convince them with a freemium model at the start.
However, while browsing the forum, I came across something that confused me, and I’d like to clarify it.

If I use Retool to build my website and start attracting test users or members, will I need to pay for those users?
In other words, does Retool charge me for external users (whether they are test users or active members), or do I only need to pay for the team members I add to my project?

I’ve previously worked with platforms like Zoho Creator, Thunkable, Bubble, Wix Studio, Webflow, and WordPress, and have provided services to hundreds of clients. I’ve never encountered a pricing model like this before. Is this really the case?

I’d appreciate any clarification on this. Thank you in advance!

Hi @DigitalArtisan

On the free version of Retool up to 5 users are included in the subscription. You would have to upgrade to Teams in order to have greater than 5 users.

Something you may want to consider is that there are two type of users. End users and Standard users. End users are users that visit your application, but never make an edit. Standard users are users that do edit your app. Both are charged at different rates.

Unless you subscribe to Business or higher, you won't be able to limit who can edit your apps (permissions). Therefore, if you're planning on sharing this with external users, you'll probably want to use the Business subscription and use that pricing in mind with your business strategy.

Hope that helps!
