Advanced Permissions in Retool: The Fundamentals

Advanced permissions in Retool: The Fundamentals

Hey all! We are releasing our last piece of content for the year and it’s a big one - Permissions in Retool. Retool’s UI can make managing complex permissions pretty straightforward, but it’s important to have an understanding of its quirks and nuances to avoid any unintended consequences or data leaks.

This article goes over:

  • The fundamentals of the User Groups Permissions UI: What does Use, Edit, and Own mean in the context of each permission type (resources, workflows, and apps)?
  • Risky settings to look over in the ‘Additional’ tab
  • Some essential tips for permissions in Retool

It proved a real beast trying to get our understanding and experience with permissions into an article like this, so we’re open to hearing your feedback on whether this helps people’s understanding, or if its still unclear. Also, make sure to always test thoroughly before deployment.

Come January, we’ll be talking about different approaches to permissions you can take and their pros and cons. (hopefully by then Multipage will have RBAC? :crossed_fingers:)

Happy holidays all and see you all next year!

Hi @JoeyKarczewski,

Congratulations and thank you for such a detailed blog post.

I don't think I or most other retool users are aware of the fact that the teams plan gives access to basic permission roles. It's not at all clear from the pricing on the website. It would be important for Retool team to update the description of each plan so that future and current users know,

Awesome work here and thanks for sharing this! I just want to clarify for anyone visiting that our Team subscription does not include the ability to set permissions. Please let me know if there are any questions :slightly_smiling_face:.
