How to add tooltip/hover description to table action button?

Hi Retool community!

I'm trying to add a hover tooltip/description to an action button that I've added (to my table component:
table component -> Toolbar -> Appearance -> custom button

What I've done:

  • Added a button to my table through the Appearance section
  • The button works fine for its intended action
  • But I can't figure out how to add a hover tooltip to explain what the button does

Hey @Dorc, welcome back to the Retool Community!

I completely understand the issue you’re facing. To help clarify, I recorded a quick screen demo based on your description. In my case, the hover tooltip on the custom button is working as expected, and I’m also able to easily customize the tooltip content to display exactly what I want.

Here’s the screen recording for reference:

This should give you a clearer idea of how it behaves on my side. If you’re still seeing different behavior, could you share a bit more detail about your setup.

Thanks for your response! I think I might have a bug.. I used an old component of table and after updating it I can not reach to this toolbar settings options:

Yes @Dorc,

I noticed that you’re currently using the deprecated Table component. I’d recommend switching over to the new Table component, since the deprecated one no longer receives updates or bug fixes from Retool. This is likely why you’re running into issues — the older component doesn’t always work correctly with newer Retool features or updates.

Here’s a screenshot for reference:

Hey @Dorc - all of the configuration options that you're looking for can be found in the Toolbar add-on!

I hope that helps - let us know if you have any additional questions. :+1:

But @Darren, from the screenshot shared it’s clear that @Dorc is using the Deprecated Table (Legacy) component. I’ve already provided both screenshots and a screen recording of the new Table component to highlight the difference.

I also suggested that she switch to the latest Table component instead of the deprecated one, since the legacy version is no longer being updated and often fails to work properly with newer Retool features or updates. Migrating to the new component will ensure better stability, compatibility, and access to the ongoing improvements being rolled out by Retool.

My understanding is that @Dorc already tried using the new table component but wasn't sure how to configure the toolbar, which is why I shared the above screenshot. Let me know if I'm misunderstanding!
