Goal
Have the Custom Component Library (CCL) correctly detected and displayed in:
-
Embed URLs
-
App Settings → Custom Component Library section (including the CCL version in use)
This was working previously and stopped without any intentional changes on our end.
Issue
As of today, our Retool Custom Component Library suddenly stopped being recognized by Retool Cloud.
-
I can still add and use custom components in the app
-
However, in App Settings, Retool no longer recognizes that the app is using CCL
-
Previously, the settings page showed which CCL version was in use
-
Now it incorrectly indicates that CCL is not being used
-
This also affects embed URLs, where the CCL is no longer reflected / detected
Steps Taken to Troubleshoot
-
Verified that the custom components can still be added and rendered in the app
-
Checked App Settings to confirm CCL detection (now missing)
-
Redeployed the Custom Component Library
-
Tested deploying the CCL locally — issue still persists
-
Confirmed there were no changes made to the CCL code prior to this issue
-
Suspecting a possible Retool Cloud change, as the behavior changed suddenly
Additional Info
-
Deployment type: Retool Cloud
-
Environment: Affects embedded apps and app settings
-
Expected behavior:
App Settings should correctly show that the app is using CCL and display the active CCL version (as before) -
Actual behavior:
Settings indicate that the app is not using CCL -

Hi @matt_lmi , thanks for the detailed report! Our team just attempted to reproduce what you’re seeing but wasn’t able to reproduce what you mentioned with the missing Custom Component library. We’re hoping to gather more information or find you a workaround if you’re still having issues, but glad you’re still able to add and use the custom components in your app.
Here’s a follow up question for troubleshooting - are you able to create a new app > drag in your custom component > and see if your CCL is present in your App Settings? Hoping to gauge if this is an app issue.
Hi Kenny, thank you for your response.
are you able to create a new app > drag in your custom component > and see if your CCL is present in your App Settings?
- yes I was able to drag it in the new app and in also appeared in the app settings.
It used the published version.
But when I tried on the existing app, it keeps using the dev version.
Yes, we were able to drag in the component and see the CCL appear in the app settings:
Interesting. So it seems it’s only affecting your existing app. Let’s look into that.
Could you try:
- Duplicate the existing app
- From the duplicate app, remove the custom component
- Reload the page
- Add in the custom component and see if it is detected from the App Settings?
Hi Kenny,
tried duplicating the existing app and tried finding the custom component.
However, it didn’t show up in the list.
Okay, thanks for testing that out and confirming. I was hoping to get you a workaround for the time being. Our eng team is investigating on our end. I’ll get back to you once we have any updates.
thanks Kenny looking forward to your update!
Hey @matt_lmi in the meantime, as a workaround, can you try refreshing the editor to see if it helps?
- My goal: Continuing to display my custom components whilst being able to update my retool application
- Issue: As of yesterday, any update made on my multiapp retool app, updates custom components to the new configuration, and all of my custom components become blank. The custom component libraries are listed as not used in app and the component’s information is inaccessible in edit mode if I enter the page after the previously explained symptom has occurred.
- Steps I've taken to troubleshoot: For the time being, I’ve set the multiapp’s version to the last version before this issue started to occur, which allows the custom component to continue to work, however this prevents any continued development on this page. Additionally, though this would be a work around, I’ve been trying to reupload the custom component so I could at least can a return to functionality whilst this issue is occurring but I get the following error whilst following the current instructions:
npx retool-ccl init
npm error code E404
npm error 404 Not Found - GET ``https://registry.npmjs.org/retool-ccl`` - Not found
npm error 404
npm error 404 The requested resource 'retool-ccl@*' could not be found or you do not have permission to access it.
npm error 404
npm error 404 Note that you can also install from a
npm error 404 tarball, folder, http url, or git url.
npm error A complete log of this run can be found in:(Log file included below) - Additional info: Cloud. The custom components have also disappeared from the selected components menu available on the left.
Hi Chien, thank you for the response.
I did try both normal refresh and hard refresh. However problem still persist.
FYI: we are using muliplayer mode.
I also tried asking my colleague to log out first and then only one logs in - did a refresh etc - problem still persist.
Hi all, just wanted to follow up and see if there are any updates on this issue or next steps from the Retool team. Happy to provide more details if needed. Thanks!
Hey @matt_lmi! ![]()
Have you tried doing a clear cache hard refresh? This can be done by:
- opening your retool app where you're working with your custom component in dev
- opening devTools
- right clicking your
↺refresh page button and select 'Clear cache and hard refresh' option.
Hi AJ,
Thanks for the suggestion! The issue seems to be resolved now. I’m not entirely sure what changed, but when I opened it this morning, everything was working again. I’ll continue testing and will post an update if the issue reappears, but for now it looks good.
Hi! We pushed a fix to Cloud—are you still experiencing this issue? If yes, do you mind giving me the UUID of your app? Thanks!
