Component Overlay Functionality / Gradient Background Effects

We recently onboarded Theming in Retool, which gives us great control over the design aspects. Since Retool is becoming more and more front facing, we'd like to propose two additional features to further enhance the design experience:

  1. Component Overlay Functionality
  • Allow components to be overlaid within containers
  • Enable placing text components or nested containers with text over images
  • Example use case: Adding captions or descriptions directly on images (container -> image -> container -> text)

  1. Following this idea: Gradient Background Effects
  • Allow customization of gradient background in components (e.g., from pink to transparent)
  • Provide options to adjust gradient angle/direction
  • Example use case: Creating visually appealing container background

Thanks for considering.

Threads that mentioned an alternative approach of this idea:
Background image in container
Image as container bckground

+1, if implemented well would be very useful. Maybe a toggle to allow a component to stack would help avoid confusion.

@django thank you for your feedback! As you noticed, we've gotten similar requests before, so I linked your request to our existing feature request to give it some extra evidence. We'll reach out as soon as we have any updates on the progress of this feature.

Any updates on this?

Hi @GuyDev,

Just checked the ticket and the status is 'ready for work' so it should be getting assigned out to an engineer with open band width on the next round of assignments.

Will let you know if I get any more updates in this thread :crossed_fingers:
