Can We Still Disable Multiplayer Editing? External Workflow (VS Code) Now Frustrating

  1. My goal:
Use VS Code (Cursor) to edit my queries and quickly switch back to Retool without having to refresh the page every time.

  2. Issue:
The multiplayer editing feature appears to always be enabled now. I used to be able to turn it off, which allowed changes to sync more smoothly with fewer reloads. Currently, if I update a query externally, I have to manually refresh Retool to see the change.

  3. Steps I've taken to troubleshoot:

  • Looked through editor settings for a multiplayer toggle
  • Searched Retool docs and forum posts
  • Tried refreshing the page and restarting the app
  • Tested both in Cloud and local preview environments
  1. Additional info:
  • Environment: Cloud
  • Tools: VS Code (Cursor), Retool web editor
  • Screenshots: Not applicable, but happy to provide if needed

Hi @JasperCreationss ,

Thanks for reaching out -- multiplayer editing is now enabled by default and cannot be disabled.

Can you explain more about the issues you're seeing with the VSCode integration? Are you talking about this alert which prompts you to pull in the updated version of the query?

Best,
Erin

Hi Erin,

Yes, exactly that. The alert keeps prompting me to pull the updated version of the query. On top of that, I often get messages saying the page failed to reload, that I'm not on the current version, or that there were errors loading the page — all of which force me to reload the entire page each time.

It’s been pretty disruptive to the workflow, especially when trying to make quick changes in cursor .

Got it -- can you send me your Retool subdomain? I can disable multiplayer for you while we investigate.

Just to add on, we are also experiencing issues with multiplayer editing. If a single user is editing then another joins the original user is not longer able to save and is presented with the out of date message.

Reloading from this state reveals multiple users now editing but runs the risk of knocking the newer user out. It's really hurting our productivity and the confidence for multiple team members to edit apps.

Our sub domain is https://pillargrc.retool.com/

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just to clarify @Erin_Masatsugu — the “Failed to save” screen that @james_at_alab posted is exactly the one I was trying to refer to earlier when I mentioned issues like "the page failed to reload" or "not on the current version." I was away from my desk at the time and couldn’t recall the exact wording, but that screenshot matches what I’ve been seeing as well.

I also get this notification when it happens.

I should also share this seems to happen when there's no other user sometimes too. In general the editing experience which was previously rock solid is becoming increasingly flakey.

Thanks @JasperCreationss and @james_at_alab -- we're aware of these issues and are working on ways to make this less disruptive!
