Sync Sylius data to Retool Database or query it live with REST?

Hello everyone,

We use the Missive email client at our company. Missive has a Retool integration, and this integration runs in the sidebar. While it’s open, Retool can access certain data from the currently open email. We’re an online store and use Sylius. The goal is that when you’re viewing an email, certain customer data (current email address) is displayed so you can take quick actions. For example, how much revenue we generate from this customer, their recent orders, quick cancellations—and so on.

Both systems have a REST API.
Now my question:
Do I need to sync the data from Sylius to the Retool database, or can I handle all of this using appropriate HTTP requests? Also: I’m not a developer. I work in IT, but I know very little about code, databases, queries, etc.
What’s the best way for me to get started? Sure, I could build everything with AI, but my goal is to learn something from this project.

Summary

Building a first Retool app to surface Sylius ecommerce customer data (revenue, recent orders, quick actions like cancellations) inside the Missive email client's Retool sidebar integration, keyed off the currently open email's address. The main question is whether Sylius data must be synced into the Retool Database or whether live HTTP requests to the REST APIs are sufficient — asked by someone new to code and databases.

AI Response

For this use case, there's no need to sync Sylius data into the Retool Database — on-demand REST API requests are the recommended approach. The Missive integration exposes the currently open email address, which can be passed as a parameter into REST API queries against the Sylius (and Missive) APIs to fetch orders, revenue, and trigger actions in real time. Set each API up once as a REST API resource (importing an OpenAPI/Swagger spec enables endpoint autocompletion), then build queries that reference the email value and bind the results to table and text components. A Retool Database only becomes worthwhile if data needs to be cached, aggregated, or combined across sources for performance — which is optional here, not required to get started.

you probably don't need to sync anything to start. set Sylius up as a REST resource and query it live using the email from the open Missive conversation, then show the customer and last few orders in a table. only add a sync later if the API is slow or you need history or reporting that is awkward to pull each time. starting with one read only query makes the learning part way easier too.

Unfortunately, I really have no idea how to do this. I know how REST works, but I don't know how to retrieve the email address, link it to the request, and then display it.

AI would be a solution, but i want to learn and understand it. :frowning:
