Public apps deprecated in self hosted?

I have previously used public apps on self hosted instances of Retool, however I'm working on a new instance and the option seems to be disabled "The public apps feature is not in your plan".

According to the documentation it's not available to self-hosted installs. Was this feature removed?

It also looks like there's an environment variable for DISABLE_PUBLIC_PAGES. Can I set this to false and safely display read-only applications for users on our VPN network?

Interesting...what version are you on?

I'm on 3.114.3

Oh! That would be interesting to hear from Retool people here. We were planning to use that in the future. Currently on the Business plan. But no way Im going to the enterprise plan for this. Heard its 5 figures :exploding_head:

Enterprise - You will need to enabled the variable setting to enable it. You can do it.

From what I understood it's only available on self-hosted business committed plans. Please someone from Retool confirm.

Hi all! And welcome to the community, @holly. :slightly_smiling_face:

This is correct.

It is an admittedly confusing part of the product, though, so I'm happy to provide some clarification. The majority of customers running a self-hosted instance do so within the confines of a VPN, meaning the very notion of a public app is inherently less meaningful. In June 2023 - with the release of version 3.1.0 - we made the decision to deprecate public apps for self-hosted deployments.

Since then, some of our customers with large user bases or specialized use cases have opted to self-host their deployment with the primary motivation being specialized infrastructure and scaling, as opposed to isolation within a VPN. As such, self-hosted public apps are now only available on a committed plan and for use cases that justify it.

I hope that answers your question, but recognize that it's not necessarily what you want to hear if you were counting on this feature. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions!
