Expand content to fit makes it hard to access page container attributes

  • Goal: Trying to set Expand Content to Fit as true at the page level. Doing so snaps inner containers to the complete width of the page and makes it impossible to access the Main page again

  • Steps:

  1. Create new page
  2. Add container to page
  3. Set expand content to fit to true (for Main page) and container
  4. Unable to click and access "Main page" to update spacing/appearance attributes
  • Details: We're using self hosted retool version 3.75.26

  • Screenshots:

Before setting expand content to fit ("Main" is visible and attributes can be set)

After setting expand content to fit

It becomes impossible to find/click "Main" because the container fits the entire page

Example, now only container1 is reachable in the retool editor

@tinathomas_rba,

I know this can be a bit cumbersome, but I've found the best solution to "select" the parent container is to use the "Component Tree" to select the item you're looking for. I know that's less than ideal, but is definitely a workaround for the parent being "hidden."

Here is a screenshot of the Main container being "Expand content to fit" as well as another container, titled container1, which is also "Expand content to fit" for a single text box. Looking at the "Component Tree" view I can easily select the container1 component.

This is a great workaround! The other recommendation I'll make is to use the Cmd + K shortcut to search for, target, and inspect the main canvas.

Hey @tinathomas_rba - I've marked the above post as the "Solution" to this topic, as I believe it offers a functional workaround to the issue that you originally raised. That said, it should still be possible to select the Main component in a consistent manner whether the Expand content to fit is enabled or not. I've raised this feedback internally and will let you know when there's been an update. :+1:
