It is virtually impossible to edit a modal when editing in Safari and the left sidebar is open.
Focus goes beneath the modal, and you can end up editing the components in the parent container. The modal is also not closable.
When the left sidebar is close, the modal works normally and is closable.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing these issues, I can definitely investigate reproducing this behavior and filing a bug report if I can consistently reproduce the UI behavior you are seeing.

Update: went to test out a modal and found another issue when the side panel is open, but not the issue you had reported 
filed a bug report and will keep you posted on any update I hear from the engineering team.
