Any plans to allow agents to use queries as tools or interact with Retool apps? Seems like Retool would be uniquely set up to create agents that are directly integrated within an app created in Retool.
For example, maybe I have a chat window open and say "go through this table and change the value of column X where column Y is Z, then run X workflow" where columns X/Y are in a table on the screen and workflow X is just a query I have set up in the app. Rather than creating the tools in the agent, it can just interact with the in-scope queries on the page.
Another example - "search the web for XYZ and write a report, then enter that report into the text box on the screen".
Completely agree with you, Retool is incredibly well positioned for this.
Here's a useful thread on this, I think retool is working towards that goal, but currently is still not there yet
With regards to the below:
Another example - "search the web for XYZ and write a report, then enter that report into the text box on the screen".
This one is slightly different, although you could already achieve that by having the report being sent to you via pdf , email, or uploading it to a retool database temporarily so you can see it in your app.
Yes, this is definitely a direction that aligns with the broader goal of making agents more useful inside real workflows. Allowing agents to interact with in-scope queries or components within Retool apps—like running a query, modifying a table, or filling in a form—would make them much more powerful and context-aware.
I definitely agree, having agents in apps being able to use all the tools available in the app and interact with the in app components will be incredibly powerful and is definitely a goal for Retool Agent's to reach that capability
As Miguel pointed out from that other thread, one major initiative for this is going to connecting app state to Agents which is still in its early stages. We will continue to push upgrades and iterations as we move forward on our roadmap!
We have have a very special surprise coming out in the next few weeks....check out this youtube video we dropped here for using AI to build out Retool apps
