Darshan Hiranandani : Performance Benefits of Using AMD Servers with Retool – Anyone Tried It?

Hi everyone,

I’m Darshan Hiranandani, interested in hearing about your experiences using AMD servers with Retool. Specifically, I’m curious if anyone has seen any performance improvements when running Retool applications on AMD hardware.

I’m particularly interested in the following aspects:

Speed: Did you notice faster load times or improved responsiveness in your Retool apps when deployed on AMD servers?
Scalability: How did your AMD server handle increased traffic or load? Was it easy to scale without seeing performance drops?
Cost Efficiency: AMD servers tend to be more affordable—did you find better performance-to-cost ratios compared to other options like Intel?
Specific Use Cases: If you have any specific examples or workflows where AMD architecture made a noticeable difference, I’d love to hear them!
Looking forward to hearing your insights. Thanks in advance!

Wouldn't a better question be, "how well does NodeJS perform on AMD hardware?"

I don't think Retool adds any optimizations that can detect hardware....

Hey @darshanhiranandani23! Thanks for reaching out.

It sounds like you're exploring different server options for deploying a self-hosted Retool instance. Is that right?

To start, it's important to keep in mind the fact that the official images we release are all intended to run on CPUs with amd64/x86-64 architecture. While technically possible to run Retool on an arm64 machine, it requires a translation layer and typically results in poorer performance.

As to your original question, I am not personally aware of any significant performance difference between AMD and Intel-based hardware when it comes to running a Retool instance.
